Final Layout

Our final was to create a two-page spread for stories other students who traveled to Peru over winter break had written. The story I was assigned was about a marketplace located in Cuzco which is called the, "Inca Jungle."

I was supplied with only one photo which I toned and cropped. I created my own illustration of Peru to show where Cuzco was located for travelers wishing to visit the "Jungle." I also added a sidebar to display how you can get in contact and visit the "Inca Junlge."

I had to use multiple pull-out quotes because the story was shorter than usual. To make sure I had as little white space as I could manage I used captions, a large heading and the pull-out quotes to fill the spaces.

Wanderer Cover Design

Part of our final was to create a magazine cover design. I chose the option of the big bold heading over the more creative heading. I felt that it was crisper and more professional looking.

I chose to add effects to the subheads for all the inside stories and used different colors to make them pop. I know when I am looking for magazines I generally buy the one that catches my eye, and this is definitely eye catching.

Layout

This week we took our images that we shot over spring break and made a layout with them. I resized and toned all three photo's and also made copies for the internet.
To resize and tone I took the pictures, changed the brightness and contrast so there was no color that was excessive. I also changed the sharpness on the images. I cropped all the unneeded elements.
I then created the layout, The Nichols Bridgeway is the focus because I am mostly talking about art and architecture in the city. I then created captions that did not take away from the images by using a muted font, but making it bold so it will still be seen.
The headline I used was cheesy, "Sweet Home Chicago," but I used the word Chicago to make people look at the photo of the Nichols Bridgeway. I chose black and red because they weren't too showy but they still grab attention.

Type

Throughout this course, we will be making a specific logo for our magazine. We are allowed to somewhat pick and choose the font and color to best fit the magazine we will be writing for. It is a student travel magazine focusing on Peru, where we will be creating our own layouts to go with stories of students that have traveled there. These are some of the logos I chose.

Spring Break Photo Restoration

This week we were to have taken pictures of our spring break. I then took my pictures and made two copies, one for a magazine and the other for an online source. The caption would read, "Many people travel from around the world to see "Cloud Gate," or more commonly known as "The Bean" by Anish Kapoor during their spring break."
I had a set of steps that needed to be completed for both photos. First, I changed the resolution size to 300 to fit the magazine size. Then I made tone adjustments by lowering some of the magenta and black tones, and adding some cyan tones. I also took away some of the yellow. I then sharpened the image. I then cropped away any of the background that was not necessary and saved it as a TIFF file.
To make the photo useable for the web, I then cropped the photo again to only focus on "The Bean." I then changed the resolution to 72, and resampled the sides to make them small enough for the internet. I changed it back to an RGB picture, as opposed to a magazines CYMK print. Lastly, I saved the photo as a JPG file and was ready to post.

Bisabuela Restoration

This week I refurbished an old painting using Photoshop. I was given the old painting that had water stains, holes and many other marks. Using Photoshop I covered the holes that were in the original. I also used the stamp tool to clear the painting of any stains. Lastly, on the woman's face I made sure there was not too many other stains. You can see the difference between the first and second images.

Happiest Couples

This week we added captions to the stories we were give. I changed one of the pictures to the young man holding an open wallet from a different smiling couple so it wasn't as redundant. I increased the size of the first picture to draw in attention. I also put the first caption next to the large photo so I would not lose any of the story material.
